Must We Give 10% to the Church?

It happened again. I was visiting somewhere and the preacher told us that we needed to pay 10% of our income to the church. He used Malachi from the Old Testament:

Malachi 3:8  "Will a man rob God? yet ye rob me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9  Ye are cursed with the curse; for ye rob me, even this whole nation. 10  Bring ye the whole tithe into the store-house, that there may be food in my house, and prove me now herewith, saith Jehovah of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

Do we really have to pay 10% of our income to the church? The answer is no. Here are some reasons:

  1. CONTEXT: Malachi is an Old Testament book. Malachi was written to Israel – not Christians. The Old Testament laws do not apply to Christians. We are under the new law of Christ. See 2 Corinthians 3:5-18
  2. The New Testament does not tell us how much to give: Christians need to give, but the Bible does not say how much.
    1. In Acts 4:32-36 some of the believers sold property to share with those in need. They did this out of their own free will; they were not commanded to do it. This is a good thing to do, but it is not a command.
    2. In 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, Paul is writing about the money collection for the famine-stuck Judean church. He encourages them to give by saying, “[H]e who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully” (9:6.) But, he also says each person should give as they have, “purposed in their hearts; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver” (9:7.) Did you see that? We do not give under compulsion. No one can tell us how much to give. We give as we have decided in our hearts.

So, we need to give. The spreading of the Gospel and helping the poor are what the money is for. But, you should never feel under pressure to give.
