God with us

God with us

Matthew 2

The world is filled with injustice, but God is always with us.

The air in the court room was like that of a funeral parlor. Billy Gilway liked it that way. He was on trial again for armed robbery and assault. Twice before he had been arrested and stood trial. Twice before he had scoffed at the hurt and hateful stares of the victims’ familes. And, twice before, he had walked out beyond the grasp of man and law.

Billy had good connections. His brother, James, was a hotshot business man. Within fifteen minutes of Billy's phone call, James had contacted a few people and Billy was practically free. Billy turned his head towards the back of the courtroom as the doors swung open and his salvation, Andrew T. Bartholemeu strode in.

Andrew loved his job. His eyes surveyed the familiar room and then focused on Billy. "There’s the fool," he thought as he saw him. He gripped Billy's hand in greeting and sat down. "Thanks to fools like this who make me rich," he thought.

He had read the evidence. He knew Billy was guilty. Again. Leaning back in the chair, he smiled. He was a lawyer, and his work was to defend his client, and that he did well.

Andrew turned his head to acknowledge the prosecution. He knew from their eyes that he intimidated them. He had never lost a case, and that brought him wealth, power and much influence.

From the corner of his eye he considered Billy again. "The fool thinks I am here to defend him." Andrew folded his arms confidently. He knew his primary purpose was to defend his own position.  In 17 years, he had never lost a case. He didn’t care about Billy or those he hurt. All he cared about was his reputation.

-oOo-

The world hasn't changed in 2,000 years. Men still seek their own positions to the detriment of even – it seems – God's will. Listen to this historical account in Matthew 2:

Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem in Judea. He was born during the time when Herod was king. After Jesus was born, some wise men from the east came to Jerusalem. The wise men asked the people, "Where is the new baby who is king of the Jews? We saw the star rise in the sky in the east. We came to worship Him."
King Herod heard about this new king of the Jews. Herod was troubled about this. And all the people of Jerusalem were worried too. Herod called a meeting of all the leading priests and teachers of the law. Herod asked them where the Christ would be born. They answered, "In the town of Bethlehem in Judea. The prophet wrote about this in the Scriptures:

“Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are important among the rulers of Judah.
Yes, a ruler will come from you, and that ruler will lead Israel, my people."

Then Herod had a secret meeting with the wise men from the east. Herod learned from the wise men the exact time they first saw the star. Then Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem.

Did you see that? "Then Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem."

Herod, like Andrew T. Bartholemew knew the truth. Herod like Andrew held within his power the hope of the innocent. Herod, like Andrew weighed up the options, and chose selfishness over what was clearly right.

Look again at the Scriputure:

"King Herod heard about this new king of the Jews. Herod was troubled about this. And all the people of Jerusalem were worried too. Herod called a meeting of all the leading priests and teachers of the law. Herod asked them where the Christ would be born."

Somehow Herod concluded that the new king the wise men were speaking about was the Christ.  The Christ was the King promised by God in ages past.  Regardless of who this child was – whether He was from God or not – Herod felt threatened. He therefore unleashed his mindless fury on the babies of Bethlehem.  All boys, two years old and less, were to be killed.

Herod deceived and destroyed. Billy Gilway robbed and maimed. Andrew T. Bartholemew, rose to the defense of his client.
As he spoke, so he sowed doubt into the heart of truth. His knowledge of the law and its loopholes preyed on the prosecution, jumbled the judge and jeered at justice. When all was said and done, Billy was free; Andrew was exalted; and the innocent were denied of justice.

Again and again it happens. In every nation’s court, offices, and schools… and in Bethlehem:

"Rachel cries for her children; and she cannot be comforted, because her children are dead."

Surely every generation cries out, "Why doesn't God stop this injustice?"

God can stop all injustice, but doesn’t now. The crimes are not God’s fault. People are to blame. People are the ones who lie, steal and cheat. The simplest solution for God would be to destroy all people. There would be no one left to hurt others. But, God loves people and He knows that around the evil, there are many who want better lives; who do not want to do wrong. God uses the evil of people to draw the people who want good to Himself.

In the midst of the Bethlehem political backstabbing and mass-murder, notice who discovers joy:

"The star went before them until it stopped above the place where the baby was. The wise men were happy to see the star. They were filled with joy. The wise men came into the house where the baby was. They saw the baby and his mother, Mary. The wise men bowed down and worshipped the baby."

The wise men had left the decadence and deception of Herod's palace and were now at a humble, honest home. They had left the chaos of a world seeped by sin, and were now joyfully worshipping the Child-King.

Truly these were wise men: They looked beyond the darkness of this world into the eyes of Immanuel – God with us.

Look my friends and see:  no matter what happens, God is with us.
