Nelson Glueck

《编年史》XV.44

(Sanhedrin 43a, "Eve of Passover").

Why We can Trust the Bible

There is no book in the world like the Bible. Many books claim to be inspired by God, but only the Bible can objectively prove it. Here are some of the reasons you can trust the Bible:

Background: Claim of Inspiration:

The Bible claims to be inspired by God:
“All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfected, thoroughly furnished to every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16,17,)

The Bible came from God’s mouth to the writers through the Holy Spirit:
“…no prophecy of the Scripture came into being of its own private interpretation. For prophecy was not borne at any time by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke being borne along by the Holy Spirit” (2 Peter 1:20,21.)

Let’s now look at the evidence.

1) Archeological evidence

Nelson Glueck

The Bible is historically and geographically reliable. Thousands of artifacts verifying the names of ancient rulers, nations, events, cities, etc. mentioned in the Bible have been discovered. Read what some experts have said:

  • Archeologist, Nobel Laureate and holder of doctorates from nine universities, Sir William Ramsay, wrote that Luke, the author of the Bible books, Luke and Acts, "was a historian of first rank...." Luke, he continued, "should be placed along with the very greatest historians."
  • The world famous archeologist, Nelson Glueck [see picture], wrote, "No archeological discovery has ever been made that contradicts or controverts historical statements made in Scripture."

Bible is often used by archeologists to locate ancient places. To be specific, since 1958, over 2,500 Biblical sites have been confirmed by archeological discoveries. No discovery has ever contradicted the Bible. The Bible is historically accurate.

2) Textual evidence

The oldest parts of the Bible were written some 3,500 years ago, and the Bible was completed about 2,000 years ago. As a result we do not have any original manuscripts of any Bible books. Since we only have ancient copies of the original manuscripts. How do we know that the copies we have today are accurate? The good news is that there is more than enough textual evidence to show that we can trust the Bible we have today. We will look at that evidence soon.

First let us look at what constitutes sufficient textual evidence. We will use the below ancient classics as examples. We have in existence today:

Book

Number of copies

Number of years after the originals were written

PLATO

7

1,200 years

TACITUS’ ANNALS

2

1,000 years

THUCYDIDE’S HISTORY

8

1,300 years

EURIPEDES

9

1,500 years

ARISTOTLE

5

1,400 years

Because the copies of each book generally agree with each other, experts are quite sure that that is what was originally written. As a result, few doubt the authenticity of these classical writings even though many changes could easily have been made in the many centuries between the original writings and the copies that now exist.

Now then, let’s consider the textual evidence we have for the New Testament, and please compare the below table with the above table of Greek and Roman classics.

Book

Number of copies

Number of years after the originals were written

NEW TESTAMENT (In original Greek)

5,366 copies!

35 – 300 years

NEW TESTAMENT (In other languages)

24,600 copies!

35 – 300 years

The amount of evidence is staggering – especially when considering that these copies agree with each other! The New Testament is without a doubt the most highly documented of the ancient world!

We can therefore, can say with absolute confidence that the NT we have today IS what God wants us to have. There is absolutely no reason to doubt its authenticity.
Add to this the promise of Jesus:

The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but My Words shall not pass away” (Matthew 24:35.)

3) Prophecy:
Prophecy is one of the most exciting evidences for the Bible, but because prophecy is so misunderstood, we need to properly define what it is.
Prophecy is not predication. The weather bureau predicts the weather based on scientific data gathered. Prophecy is different. Prophecy is:

  • Beyond the ability of an educated guess;
  • Includes very specific details;
  • Is 100% accurate every time; 90% accuracy is not prophecy!

Every now and again another movie or book that claims to have prophecy comes out, but these co-called prophecies cannot meet the above criteria and so are not true. In essence, true prophecies are miracles-in-words because the prophet sees something that could only have been supernaturally revealed by the only One able to transcend time: God. Only the Bible has true prophecy.

Quick Bible Background:
In order to ground anyone unfamiliar with the Bible, we will do a quick background explanation of what the Bible is.

  • The Bible is a library of 66 books written by over 40 people over a period of 1,500 years.
  • It has 2 main parts: the Old and New Testaments.
  • The Old Testament was written from about 1,500BC to 400BC
  • The New Testament was written from about AD45 to AD95
    • There are therefore about 400 years separating the Old from the New Testaments
  • The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls – which contained portions of every Old Testament book except Esther – proved that the Old Testament was completed before the New Testament was begun.
    • This is important because the prophecies in the Old Testament need to predate the New Testament else they would not be prophecies!

Analogy: Your Amazing Book
Imagine one day you go to a library and, to your great surprise, you discover a book about you. As you page through it you read various facts about yourself which you knew are true. For example:

  • Where you were born
  • Who your ancestors are
  • Where you live
  • Who your friends are
  • What you studied
  • Your job

Not one fact is wrong. Imagine then you discover that book was written 400 years before you were born. You would probably be shocked! If the above were true, this would be an example of true prophecy.
The above example contains a mere 6 facts about your life, the Bible has 300+ facts about Jesus’ life – all written at least 400 years before He was born. Here are some real prophecies from just 3 Old Testament chapters that were fulfilled perfectly in Jesus:

1. JESUS’ BIRTHPLACE – about 700 years before He was born, Bethlehem was identified as Jesus’ birthplace

Old Testament

Time between written and fulfilled

New Testament

Micah 5:2  And thou, Beth-Lehem Ephratah, Little to be among the chiefs of Judah! From thee to Me he cometh forth--to be ruler in Israel, And his comings forth are of old, From the days of antiquity.

About 700 years later

Matthew 2:1  And Jesus having been born in Beth-Lehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, lo, mages from the east came to Jerusalem,

2. JESUS’ BETRAYAL – about 500 years before He was born, God knew the details of Jesus’ betrayal

Old Testament

Time between written and fulfilled

New Testament

Zechariah 11
12 And I said to them, If it is good, give My price; and if not, let it go. So they weighed My price thirty pieces of silver. 13  And Jehovah said to me, Throw it to the potter, the magnificent price at which I was valued by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them to the potter in the house of Jehovah.

* Note the details: The 30 pieces of silver – the amount at which God was valued – was thrown into the temple to the potter. Look how perfectly the prophecy unfolds in the New Testament.

About 700 years later

Matthew 27
3  Then Judas--he who delivered him [Jesus] up--having seen that he was condemned, having repented, brought back the thirty silver pieces to the chief priests, and to the elders, saying, 4  `I did sin, having delivered up innocent blood;' and they said, `What--to us? thou shalt see!' 5  and having cast down the silverlings in the sanctuary, he departed, and having gone away, he did strangle himself. 6  And the chief priests having taken the silverlings, said, `It is not lawful to put them to the treasury, seeing it is the price of blood;' 7  and having taken counsel, they bought with them the field of the potter, for the burial of strangers

JESUS’ CRUCIFIXION – Over 1,000 years before Jesus was born, God told David the details of Jesus execution. It was prophesied that Jesus would be crucified – before crucifixion was even invented! Read the prophecy below:

Old Testament

Time between written and fulfilled

New Testament

Psalm 22

1  My God, my God, why have You forsaken me, and are far from my deliverance, and from the words of my groaning?

--

7  All who see Me mock me; they shoot out the lip; they shake the head, saying, 8  He trusted on Jehovah; let Him deliver Him; let Him rescue Him, since He delights in Him!

--

12  Many bulls have circled around Me; strong bulls Of Bashan have surrounded Me. 13  They opened wide their mouths on Me, like a ripping and a roaring lion. 14  I am poured out like water, and all My bones are spread apart; My heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of My bowels.

--

15  My strength is dried up like a potsherd, and My tongue clings to My jaws;

--

Psa 22:16  and You have brought Me into the dust of death. For dogs have circled around Me; the band of spoilers have hemmed Me in, piercers of My hands and My feet. 17  I can count all My bones; they look and stare at Me. 18  They divide My garments among them and cast lots for My clothing.

Over 1,000 years later

1,000 years later

1,000 years later

1,000 years later

Matthew 27:46  And about the ninth hour, Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?

--

Matthew 27:41  And in the same way also the chief priests mocked, with the scribes and elders, saying, 42  He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43  He trusted in God, let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him. (For He said, I am the Son of God.)

--

Mark 15:16  And the soldiers led Him away inside the court, which is the praetorium. And they called together all the cohort. 17  And they clothed Him with purple and plaited a crown of thorns and put it around His head. 18  And they began to salute Him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19  And they struck Him on the head with a reed, and spat on Him, and placing the knees, they bowed to Him.

--

John 19:28 After this, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said, I thirst.

--

John 19:23  Then when they had crucified Jesus, the soldiers took His garments and made four parts, one part to each soldier; and also His tunic. And the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24  Therefore they said among themselves, Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to find whose it shall be (that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says, "They parted my garments among them, and for my garment they cast lots"). Therefore the soldiers did these things.

*NOTE: crucifixion is done by piercing the hands and feet. This Roman method of execution did not exist when the prophecy was written 1,000 years before.

How was it possible for Old Testament writers to have known such details of Jesus’ life hundreds of years before He was born? The only way is that God revealed it to them. Again, only the Bible has true prophecy.

The above is just a handful of the 300+ prophecies concerning Jesus. [You can download a larger prophecy list from here ] The prophecies not only prove that Jesus is the Messiah, they also prove that the Bible God-inspired because only God knows the future.

Before or After?
Some are astonished by the prophecies, but don’t want to believe, so they claim the events of the New Testament never really happened. We know his is not true because the New Testament is not the only ancient book that speaks of Jesus. Here is some other non-Christian – and in some cases anti-Christian - evidence sources.

Josephus (A.D. 37-100), the Jewish historian:
"At this time there was a wise man who was called Jesus. . . . Pilate condemned Him to be condemned and to die. And those who had become His disciples did not abandon His discipleship. They reported that He had appeared to them three days after His crucifixion and that He was alive; accordingly, He was perhaps the Messiah concerning whom the prophets have recounted wonders" (Antiquities, xviii.ch. 3, subtopic 3, Arabic text).

Cornelius Tacitus (A.D. 55?-after 117), the Roman Historian, wrote of Nero's attempt to relieve himself of the guilt of burning Rome:
"Hence to suppress the rumor, he falsely charged with the guilt, and punished with the most exquisite tortures, the persons commonly called Christians, who were hated for their enormities. Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius: but the pernicious superstition, repressed for a time broke out again, not only through Judea, where the mischief originated, but through the city of Rome also" (Annals XV.44).

Lucian (second century), Greek Satirist, alludes to Christ in these words:
"The man who was crucified in Palestine because he introduced this new cult into the world. . . . Furthermore, their first lawgiver persuaded them that they were all brothers one of another after they have transgressed once for all by denying the Greek gods and by worshipping that crucified sophist himself and living under his laws" (On the Death of Peregrine).

Mara Bar Serapion (after A.D. 73) wrote a letter that now resides in the British Museum. According to F. F. Bruce it was written by a father to his son in prison. In the letter he compares the deaths of Socrates, Pythagoras, and Jesus:
"What advantage did the Jews gain from executing their wise King [Jesus]? It was just after that that their kingdom was abolished. . . . But Socrates did not die for good; he lived on in the teaching of Plato. Pythagoras did not die for good; he lived on in the statue of Hera. Nor did the wise King die for good; he lived on in the teaching which he had given".

The Jewish Talmud was completed by A.D. 500. The Babylonian Talmud reference to Jesus:
"On the eve of Passover they hanged Yeshu [Jesus] (of Nazareth) and them herald went before him for forty days saying (Yeshu of Nazareth) is going to be stoned in that he hath practiced sorcery and beguiled and led astray Israel. Let everyone knowing aught in his defense come and plead for him. But they found naught in his defense and hanged him on the eve of Passover" (Sanhedrin 43a, "Eve of Passover").

In conclusion, there is no reason to doubt that the Bible is inspired by God.

  • The Bible claims to be inspired by God
  • Archeological evidence shows the Bible to be accurate
  • The Bible is the most well documented book of the ancient world with almost 30,000 whole or partial copies written from 35 to 300 years after the originals
  • It contains what no other book in the world does: real prophecy.

Go on, read the Bible. Jesus said,
“Mat 4:4  But he answering said, `It hath been written, Not upon bread alone doth man live, but upon every word coming forth from the mouth of God.'”

Read the Bible. It is food for the soul.

Bible reading suggestions:

  • Read the Bible in the morning before the busy day begins.
  • Begin by praying. You can simply say, “Good morning Father. I want to learn from You. Help me read and understand. Amen.”
  • Read for about 5-15 minutes and think about what you are reading. Write down anything that interests you. (If you don’t fully understand, don’t worry. Write down your questions. As you continue reading, the Bible answers its own questions.)
  • Now look at what you have written down. How can you apply it to your life? Now pray about these things, for example: “Father, I read today that Jesus healed so many people. Help me today to be kind to my family and my colleagues…”
  • Where to Read:
  • If you have never read the Bible before, begin with John in the New Testament and continue from there.
  • If you want to learn about the character of Jesus, read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
  • If you want wisdom for every day, read a Proverb for each day of the month
  • If you want practical Christian living, read James and Ephesians
  • If you want to understand grace, read Galatians
  • If you want to learn how to be a good person, read Matthew 5-7 and Ephesians
  • If you are going through a hard time and need encouragement, read Psalms and Philippians
  • If you are thinking about the meaning of life, read Ecclesiastes
  • If you want to know about the history of the first church, read Acts.
  • If you want to know about church leaders and their function, read 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus
